How many lines to “guarantee” a EuroMillions win? (spoiler: you cannot)

Can you “guarantee” a EuroMillions win by playing lots of lines? No. You can still think in orders of magnitude (probability, expected cost) and avoid the traps.

At a glance

  • You cannot “guarantee” a win: you can only raise a probability.
  • The more lines you play, the more you increase your chances… and your cost.
  • A good use of stats is to understand, not to promise: Statistics

1) The setup: one line = one attempt

One EuroMillions line is one combination among a huge number of possibilities (5 main numbers + 2 Lucky Stars).

Tier odds are detailed here:

2) The simple formula (without drowning)

If the probability of winning a given tier on one line is (p), then:

  • probability of not winning that tier on 1 line = (1 - p)
  • probability of not winning that tier on (n) lines = ((1 - p)^n)
  • probability of winning that tier at least once on (n) lines = (1 - (1 - p)^n)

In plain English:

  • you can aim for a 50% chance… but (n) can become absurd
  • and it says nothing about the amount (tiers do not pay the same)

3) Order-of-magnitude example: “winning something”

People often quote “winning any tier” at about 1 in 13 (order of magnitude).

With (p \approx 1/13):

Goal (at least one win) Target probability Number of lines (n) (order of magnitude)
“A fifty-fifty chance” 50% ~ 9
“Pretty sure” 90% ~ 29
“Almost certain” 99% ~ 59

These figures are not a promise: they depend on the true (p) and do not guarantee a “profitable” win.

4) The trap: confusing “winning” with “coming out ahead”

You can win a small tier… and still be well down overall.

FAQ

Does a multiple entry “guarantee” a win?

No. It raises your chances because you cover more combinations. “Guarantee” does not exist on a random draw.

Does playing the same numbers help?

It does not change the probability. It only changes how it feels (and sometimes your risk of sharing a win if you play “popular” combinations).
