Lucky Dip vs choosing numbers

Overview

Lucky Dip is the UK Lotto feature that generates random numbers for you. You do not pick anything—the terminal or app selects 6 numbers from 1–59 at random.

Every valid combination of 6 numbers has the same probability. Lucky Dip and self-selected numbers are mathematically equivalent.

Odds are identical. "Luckier" is a feeling, not a mathematical fact.

Important

Whether you choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or let the machine pick random numbers, the chance of hitting the jackpot is the same: about 1 in 45 million.

Do the odds differ?

No. Every valid combination of 6 numbers has the same probability. Whether you choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or let the machine pick 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, the chance of hitting the jackpot is the same: about 1 in 45 million.

Lucky Dip and self-selected numbers are mathematically equivalent.

Why people prefer one or the other

Choosing your own numbers often involves:

  • Birthdays, anniversaries (so numbers tend to be ≤ 31)
  • "Lucky" numbers
  • Patterns (e.g. multiples, sequences)

Lucky Dip offers:

  • No decision fatigue
  • A spread across 1–59 (no birthday bias)
  • The feeling of leaving it to chance

Neither approach changes your odds. It is purely preference.

Birthday number bias

Many players use dates (1–31). That means numbers 32–59 are less commonly chosen. If you win the jackpot, you are more likely to share it when others have the same numbers—but the probability of winning itself is unchanged.

FAQ

Is Lucky Dip luckier?

No. Odds are identical. "Luckier" is a feeling, not a mathematical fact.

Popular numbers (e.g. 7, 13, 21) do not reduce your chance of winning. They can mean more jackpot sharing if you win, but the win probability is the same.

Can I mix Lucky Dip and my own numbers?

You can play multiple lines—some Lucky Dip, some chosen. Each line has the same odds.

Does Fetix recommend one over the other?

Fetix does not recommend either. Both have the same mathematical odds. Choose what you prefer.

Where can I see how different numbers have performed?

Use Stats filtered for UK Lotto to see frequency and last-drawn dates for each number.
